Hamilton to start Brazilian GP from pit lane

Lewis Hamilton will start Sunday’s Brazilian Grand Prix from the pit lane after his Mercedes Formula 1 team opted to break parc ferme conditions to make changes to his car following a crash in qualifying at Interlagos.

Hamilton crashed out on his first flying lap in Q1 on Saturday, leaving him 20th on the grid and requiring dispensation from the race stewards to take the start after technically failing to qualify.

Mercedes confirmed following qualifying it had opted to make a number of changes to his car after qualifying, including fitting a new power unit, breaking parc ferme conditions in the process. As a result, Hamilton will be forced to start from the pit lane at Interlagos.

“Lewis will start from pit lane as we will have to break parc ferme, fitting parts of a different specification to those used in qualifying,” a Mercedes spokesperson said.

“Prime among those will be a new power unit, as there is no penalty for doing so in this circumstance. We will confirm in the morning what exactly is being changed.”

Hamilton will take a new internal combustion engine, turbocharger and MGU-H on his Mercedes power unit for the race.
